Modern Mapping and Surveying Methods

The technological advancements of recent years have introduced a range of “cutting-edge” technologies and techniques into the modern engineer’s toolkit. Photogrammetry, laser scanners, SLAM systems, mobile mapping platforms, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are now essential field equipment for collecting three-dimensional spatial data. These tools act as productivity multipliers, enabling the mapping and surveying of hard-to-reach or hazardous areas. The resulting data is distinguished by high geometric accuracy and completeness in representing both objects and the natural environment in three
dimensions.

Case Studies

Photogrammetric surveying of surface marble quarrying sites

Photogrammetric surveying of surface marble quarrying sites

Aerial photogrammetric photography aimed at the detailed capture of surface exploitation of marble deposits. Data collection was carried out using the fixed-wing UAV eBee X and the innovative, professional photogrammetric camera S.O.D.A. 3D, which has the capability of simultaneous recording of oblique and vertical images, while the processing and analysis of the data was conducted using the Pix4Dmapper photogrammetry software.

Mobile mapping of road networks

Mobile mapping of road networks

Mapping of a road network section and all existing structures on every side, using a mobile mapping system. Data collection was carried out with the Trimble MX50 Mobile mapping system, which combines simultaneous image and Lidar data collection, while data processing and analysis was completed with the Trimble Business Center TBC software.

Mapping using SLAM in a GPS-denial environment

Mapping using SLAM in a GPS-denial environment

3D mapping of urban areas in conditions of limited or no access to GNSS satellites using SLAM technology. Data collection was carried out with the high-performance FJD Trion S1 Pro, while the high-quality scanning software Trion Model Pro was used for data processing and analysis.

Mapping Without Borders

eBee X RTK fixed-wing drone, built for large-area mapping. It is equipped with high-precision, wide-coverage cameras suitable for any task, and comes with the user-friendly eMotion flight planning software.

  • Efficient and Accurate: Meets the demands of any project
  • High Accuracy: Better than 3cm
  • Rugged and Reliable: Withstands demanding conditions
  • Large Coverage: Up to 90min autonomy with coverage of up to 500ha per flight

Fixed Wing Drone

Fixed wing drones are an excellent choice for mapping.

One of the key advantages of fixed-wing drones is their long flight duration, which, combined with high speed, makes them extremely efficient. They are considered ideal tools for mapping large areas such as road networks, agricultural farms, forest areas and remote sections of water systems. Their use is combined with photogrammetric software to create highly accurate maps and terrain models.

Integrated Photogrammetric Software

Photogrammetry software is an essential tool in the fields of mapping and 3D modeling.

Photogrammetry software processes images captured by drones or other cameras and converts them into a high-precision 3D digital model and a geometrically corrected image mosaic. Typical products of a photogrammetric software are the production of 3D point clouds, the production of 3D meshes with textures, the production of 2.5D digital surface models and the production of orthophoto maps.
